Denframe and DAKboard
Both put a household dashboard on a screen. DAKboard is a cloud service; Denframe runs on a computer in your home. Here is how they differ, checked on 29 September 2026.
| Topic | Denframe | DAKboard |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | On your own computer at home; screens load the dashboard from it over your home network. | A cloud service; screens load the dashboard from DAKboard over the internet. |
| Account | No Denframe account. The household password stays on your computer. | A DAKboard account, free to open. |
| Price | Free during the pilot and beta. Planned 1.0: a one-time household licence, price to be announced. | Free plan with one predefined layout and two calendars; Essential $6 a month ($5 billed yearly); Plus $10 a month ($8 billed yearly). Plans differ in how many layouts (DAKboard calls them screens) and calendars they include; each layout can show on 2, 5 or 10 devices by plan, and more layouts cost extra. |
| Screens | Chromecast, Google TV and Nest Hub by Cast, TV and tablet browsers by pairing, and Android panels; the compatibility page gives each one's status. No per-screen price. | Any device with a web browser and an internet connection, including smart TVs, tablets, Raspberry Pi and a Fire TV and Android app; the number of devices per layout depends on the plan. |
| Hardware to buy | None: a computer you already keep on (an Apple silicon Mac or a Windows 11 PC) and the screens you own. | Optional: DAKboard sells a wall display, an $80 CPU unit and pre-loaded micro SD cards. |
| Calendars | Google, Microsoft and ICS, connected read-only; credentials stay on your computer. | Google, Apple iCloud, Microsoft 365, Facebook events and ICS files; two on the free plan, five on Essential, unlimited on Plus. |
| Without the internet | The clock and bundled artwork keep showing on a TV browser or Android panel; online sources and Cast receivers need the internet. | Needs an internet connection. |
| Maturity | An early beta. The Mac download is a signed beta; the Windows download is still the unsigned pilot. | An established product. |
When DAKboard is the better choice
- You want nothing to install or keep running at home.
- You want to edit the screen from anywhere, or use Apple iCloud or Facebook calendars directly.
- You want a finished product with its own hardware today, not a pre-1.0 one.
When Denframe fits better
- You want calendars, credentials and household data to stay on a computer in your house, with no account.
- You want every TV, Nest Hub and panel in the house covered by one household price, not by plan tiers.
- You would rather buy a one-time licence (planned for 1.0, free until then) than subscribe.
