Use Apple Home with Denframe

Experimental

Operate approved lights and switches from Denframe, and start dashboards or mute speakers from Apple Home and Siri, with Home Assistant between them.

Experimental: Hardware tests with a real lamp, switch and the Home app. See what is still in testing.

You’ll have

The kitchen lamp turned on from Denframe, and “Hey Siri, turn on Morning dashboard” putting a dashboard on the living-room screen.

You’ll need
  • Devices you can reset: this route has not yet run with real Apple devices or lamps, so treat every step as a test. A direct route without Home Assistant (Directly) is built but off in beta builds: it is shown, but can't be chosen.
  • An owner account in a Denframe build that includes Home controls. After updating, sign in again once so your sign-in gets the home-control permission.
  • Home Assistant with the lights or switches you want to operate, connected to Denframe.
  • For Apple Home: Home Assistant's HomeKit Bridge integration and an MQTT broker Home Assistant already uses, for the Home Assistant export.
  • The Apple Home app on an iPhone or iPad. Control away from home through an Apple home hub (Apple TV or HomePod) is untested.

Follow these steps in your own Denframe. This website never connects to your household, your accounts or your devices, and never asks for your credentials.

  1. Open the Home page

Open Denframe: from Home Assistant's sidebar on the app, or from its menu-bar or tray icon on a computer. In Studio, open Sources, then Home. If Home Assistant isn't connected yet, choose Connect Home Assistant first.

The Control and share band holds the two directions as separate rows: Use home devices in Denframe and Use Denframe in Apple Home. Setting up one never sets up the other.

  2. Approve a light or switch

Beside Use home devices in Denframe, choose Home controls…. Under Find a device, type in Search lights and switches, and narrow the list with Show if you need to.

Beside the device, choose Approve on/off…. Brightness can be approved only after on/off, because setting a level turns the light on; for brightness, also set the lowest and highest percent.

Tick the box that lets household owners operate it. For a switch Denframe can't identify, also confirm it powers nothing unsafe to switch from a screen. Choose Approve control.

Only single lights and switches are offered. Groups, rooms, scenes, locks, covers such as garage doors, alarms, heating and water are not, nor is a switch named for a lock, door, gate, alarm, heating or water. Reading a value on a dashboard never lets Denframe operate that device: each control is approved on its own.

A Matter device already in Apple Home doesn't need to move: turn on its pairing mode in the Home app, add it to Home Assistant, and approve it here.

  3. Operate it from Denframe

Under Approved, use On and Off, or enter a brightness and choose Set. Denframe reports what the device says afterwards.

When a result reads Couldn't confirm it happened, check the device yourself: Denframe never sends a command again on its own. If the answer was lost on the way, Check again looks it up.

  4. Choose what Apple Home gets

Beside Use Denframe in Apple Home, choose Set up…, keep Through Home Assistant, and choose Choose what to share….

Add a Dashboard activation, a Cast preset scene or a Speaker mute switch, preview it, approve it and enable the export. Share Denframe with Home Assistant walks through that sheet.

Back in Use Denframe in Apple Home, What Apple Home gets lists each shared action as Apple Home will show it.

    Shared from DenframeApple Home showsMeaning
Dashboard activation or Cast presetA switch that turns itself back offOn starts it; off means ready again, not stopped
    Speaker muteA switchOn means muted
Playback details and text summariesNothingApple Home has no tile for them; they stay in Denframe
  5. Pair the bridge with Apple Home

In Home Assistant, add the HomeKit Bridge integration and include the scene and switch entities Denframe shares. The example below uses example entity IDs; use yours.

Optional: share only Denframe's entities through a YAML HomeKit Bridge · configuration.yaml
    homekit:
      - name: Denframe bridge
        filter:
          include_entities:
            - scene.denframe_morning_dashboard
            - switch.denframe_living_room_speaker_mute

Pair the bridge in the Apple Home app with the code Home Assistant shows. Denframe never sees or stores that code, and can't see whether the bridge is paired.

Everyone in your Apple home can use what the bridge shares.

  6. Remove or reset

To stop Denframe operating a device, open Home controls…, choose Remove beside it and confirm Remove control. Disconnecting Home Assistant, replacing its token or restoring a backup ends the approvals on that connection too.

To stop Apple Home using Denframe, remove the entity from the export, or remove it from Home Assistant's HomeKit Bridge.

  7. Test one action at a time

Turn on a shared dashboard switch in the Apple Home app, or ask Siri, and watch the screen: Apple Home and Siri accepting a tap doesn't prove it happened. The switch turns itself back off when it is ready again.

For a light, use On in Home controls… and check that the row reports the state the device confirmed.

If it doesn’t work

Home controls asks me to sign in again

Your sign-in predates home controls. Sign out with Lock dashboard in the header, then sign in once more.

A control says the device changed

Home Assistant reported a different capability for it. Approve it again after checking it's the same device.

“Not sent: Denframe may no longer operate devices on that connection”

The token can't call services. Reconnect Home with a token that can.

A shared dashboard switch doesn't appear in Apple Home

Check that Home Assistant's HomeKit Bridge includes scene and switch entities, and that the export is enabled and connected to its broker.

Siri says done but nothing happened

Check that the dashboard's screen is on and Denframe is running. Siri's reply isn't a confirmation from Denframe.
