Put it on a screen

Show a dashboard on a Chromecast, Google TV or Nest Hub

Experimental

Cast a saved dashboard to a Google Cast screen on your home network, from Home or by dragging it onto the screen.

Experimental: Casting shows the dashboard one-way through DashCast; live session controls wait for a registered Denframe Cast receiver. See what is still in testing.

You’ll have

A dashboard on the TV or Nest Hub, and its screen tile on Home saying what it shows.

You’ll need
  • LAN receiver access is on, so screens can load dashboards from Denframe: see Install on macOS or Windows. Screens reach a desktop install on port 8001 (one above its management port, 8000), and a Home Assistant install on port 8098.
  • A Chromecast, Google TV, Nest Hub or a TV with Google Cast, already set up with the Google Home app, on the same home network (not a guest or isolated one).
  • A saved dashboard: create your first dashboard.

Follow these steps in your own Denframe. This website never connects to your household, your accounts or your devices, and never asks for your credentials.

  1. Put the screen and Denframe on one network

Denframe finds Cast screens on its own network and lists them on Home. A screen has to reach Denframe back to load a dashboard, so finding it is not enough: check that LAN receiver access is on, and that no guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, firewall or VPN sits between them.

Speakers and speaker groups are Cast destinations too, but only for sound: they cannot show a dashboard.

    ConnectionWhat it showsWhat it needs

DIAL aloneNothing of Denframe’s: it finds and launches TV appsAn app-specific launch; Denframe cannot launch itself through DIAL
  2. Cast a dashboard

On Home, Cast a look lists your dashboards. When only one screen is online, or the screen you last used is online, a card’s cast button names it: press it to cast there. Otherwise the button says Cast and opens the list of screens. The arrow beside it always lists them: choose one. You can also drag a dashboard card onto a screen’s tile.

To start from the screen instead, press Change on its tile: the dashboards then offer Cast here.

  3. Know what the compatibility receiver can do

Denframe casts through DashCast, a third-party compatibility receiver, until its own Cast receiver is published. It shows the dashboard and keeps it updated, one way: the tile says Showing. DashCast’s availability and device compatibility can vary. Live session controls (adding a dashboard to a screen’s rotation, trying one on a screen, pause and next) need Denframe’s dedicated receiver.

Advanced: if you host your own registered Cast receiver (Google’s Custom Web Receiver setup (opens in a new tab)), set DENFRAME_RECEIVER_APP_ID to its app ID on the host, and DENFRAME_HOSTED_RECEIVER_ORIGIN to the HTTPS origin it is served from, then restart Denframe. In the Home Assistant app these are the receiver_app_id and hosted_receiver_origin options. This is separate from pairing a browser display.

  4. On a Nest Hub, preview at its size

A Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max is a Cast display: cast to it like a Chromecast. In the editor, Preview on offers its shapes: Small smart display (1024×600) for a Nest Hub and Landscape panel 16:10 (1280×800) for a Hub Max, and once a Hub has connected, text is sized for reading at a kitchen counter.

Touch and sound on a Nest Hub are unverified: treat it as a display to look at.

  5. Check it worked

The dashboard is on the screen, and its tile on Home shows what it is showing. A TV that only appears through DIAL, without Google Cast, is not a Cast receiver: use its web browser instead.

If it doesn’t work

The TV appears, but casting fails

Check LAN receiver access, the firewall or local-network permission, guest Wi-Fi isolation and VPN routing. The screen must reach Denframe, not just be found by it. A DIAL listing is not a Google Cast receiver.

No screens are listed

Screens appear once Denframe finds them on its network. Check that the screen is on, set up in Google Home, and on the same network as Denframe.

Adding to a rotation or trying a dashboard fails

Those need Denframe’s dedicated Cast receiver; the compatibility receiver casts one way only.

Something else

Use Support with your Denframe version, the screen’s model and software, and the error with addresses removed. Keep pairing codes and tokens private.
