Design a dashboard

Organize your dashboards and screens

Find, sort, rename and delete dashboards in Studio, set what each dashboard is for, and change what each screen shows from Home.

You’ll have

Your dashboards sorted the way you work, each named and set for its kind of screen, and Home showing your screens with the ones you use most pinned first.

You’ll need

Follow these steps in your own Denframe. This website never connects to your household, your accounts or your devices, and never asks for your credentials.

  1. Find your dashboards in Studio

In Studio, open Dashboards. Dashboards on a screen right now lead under On screens now; the rest follow under All dashboards. Each card says where it is showing, or a line that follows the sort, such as when it was last edited.

From the fourth dashboard on, a toolbar appears: Find a dashboard searches names, looks and kinds of screen, Sort orders them by Recently edited, Recently shown, Name, Newest or Purpose, and the Show chips, where there is more than one, narrow them to one kind of screen or to those On a screen. Clear filters goes back to all of them.

  2. Start, duplicate, rename or delete a dashboard

New dashboard starts the same flow as your first one; see Create your first dashboard. Browse the library finds ready-made layouts.

Each card’s ⋯ menu offers Cast to… (Show on screen… when the screen takes a dashboard one way, as casting does today), Preview, Duplicate, Rename and Delete. Rename opens the dashboard with its name ready to change. Delete asks first.

Inside the editor, the menu beside the dashboard’s name has the same: Rename, Duplicate (the copy opens to edit), Save to library… and Delete…. Pressing the name renames it too.

A dashboard used by a playlist can’t be deleted until it is removed from that playlist. See Playlists and schedules.

  3. Set what the dashboard is for

In the editor, open the menu beside the dashboard’s name and choose Dashboard settings…. Each row saves as you change it; Done closes the dialog.

    • Kind of screen: Glance, Gallery, Home or Now playing, or Alert for an alert dashboard. The line under it says what that kind does.
    • Privacy: Public shows only what anyone may see, Household adds what is for the household, and Private adds private items too.
    • Private events: how private calendar events appear: In full, Without titles, Times only or Hidden.

When the Library gave the dashboard something, the same menu has About this dashboard…: each look, layout or block it came with, its version, its licence and its credits.

Private events can be shown only on a dashboard whose Privacy is Private. Below that they are left off the screen, whatever Private events says. See Family calendar.

  4. Show a dashboard from Home

Home lists your Screens first, then your dashboards on the Cast a look shelf. Use the arrows at its end when there are more than fit.

Each dashboard card’s button casts it to your one online screen or the one you used last, or asks which screen when there is neither; the arrow beside it chooses another screen or group. Its ⋯ menu offers Preview, Add to rotation…, Edit and Delete, and Try on screen… once a screen can hold a live session. You can also drag a card onto a screen.

  5. Pin a screen and change what it shows

Each screen’s tile shows what is on it now. While it runs a rotation it offers Pause or Resume and Next; while it shows one dashboard it offers Stop.

Pin to front keeps a screen at the start of the list; Unpin releases it. Pins are kept in this browser, so another computer or phone has its own.

Change picks a new dashboard for that screen: the shelf’s cards each offer Cast here. Choose one, or press Escape to cancel.

  6. Check it worked

The screen’s tile on Home names the dashboard you chose, and in Studio that dashboard leads under On screens now. To show different dashboards at different times, see Playlists and schedules.

If it doesn’t work

Delete doesn’t remove a dashboard

A playlist uses it. Remove it from the playlist first: see Playlists and schedules.

There is no search or sort

They appear once you have four dashboards.

About this dashboard… is missing

It appears only when the Library gave the dashboard a look, layout or block.

A pinned screen isn’t first on another device

Pins are kept per browser. Pin it there too.

Casting is unavailable on the cards

Casting isn’t set up yet; the badge beside the shelf says why and links to the fix. See Chromecast, Google TV and Nest Hub.

Private events don’t show

Set Privacy to Private in Dashboard settings…, then choose how Private events appear.
