Watch currency rates and stock prices

Show daily currency rates with no account at all, or U.S. stock prices with a free Finnhub key you add on the Markets page.

You’ll have

A Markets block with your watchlist, saying how delayed its prices are and when the market is closed.

You’ll need

Follow these steps in your own Denframe. This website never connects to your household, your accounts or your devices, and never asks for your credentials.

  1. Open the Markets page

In Studio, open Sources, then Markets, and choose Add a watchlist. Choose what to watch:

    • Currency rates: daily reference rates, no key needed.
    • Stocks: U.S. share prices, with a free Finnhub key.

They are separate sources: a Finnhub problem never stops your currency rates.

  2. Watch currency rates

For Currency rates, enter the Base currency (three letters, such as USD) and up to six currencies in Watchlist, such as EUR or GBP; the base can’t be one of them.

The rates are the European Central Bank’s daily reference rates, fetched through the free Frankfurter service with no account or key; it is asked only for the currencies and the past week’s dates. They are published once a working day, so the block names the day of the rates (“Reference rates · 12 Sep”), and at weekends says the market is closed (“Market closed · rates of 12 Sep”). They are not stock prices.

  3. For stocks, add your Finnhub key

For Stocks, choose Get a free key at finnhub.io (the sheet stays open), sign in to Finnhub, copy the key from its dashboard and paste it in Finnhub API key.

The key is kept on this Denframe only, in an owner-only file, and sent only to Finnhub. It never appears in settings, on screens, in error messages or in diagnostics. Finnhub sets how many requests your plan allows: check it in your Finnhub account.

  4. Choose up to six symbols

Type tickers into Symbols, such as AAPL, NVDA or BRK.B, up to six. Or search by company name under Find a company or ticker, which lists U.S. matches once the key is in, and choose one to add it.

If your Finnhub plan delays quotes, open Advanced quote timing and enter the Minutes behind the market; leave it blank if the plan is real-time.

  5. Add it to dashboards

Tick the dashboards under Show on and choose Add watchlist. Denframe tests the symbols and the key with Finnhub before saving.

On the source’s page, Symbols saves as you change it, tested first. Quote delay opens a sheet with Change ▸ and is tested when you choose Save. The Finnhub key row shows Key saved; choose Replace… only to change the key.

A stocks watchlist refreshes every 15 minutes with one request per symbol: at most 24 requests an hour for six symbols. Each change on the page is tested with one request per symbol too, so building a list one symbol at a time costs a few dozen requests.

Prices are for display, not trading. Denframe places no orders, holds no brokerage details, and doesn’t cover crypto, exchanges outside the U.S. or intraday charts.

  6. Choose what one dashboard shows

In the dashboard editor, select the Markets block. Under Content, Symbols picks which of the watchlist’s symbols this block shows, and Leads with chooses the one that comes first and shows at a glance.

  7. Check it worked

The block lists the quotes with one status line, such as Delayed 15 min · as of 12:00 · USD. Denframe never calls a quote live, and doesn’t convert prices. When the quote time is too old for an open market, it says Market closed instead.

An unknown symbol is left out rather than shown as zero. If some symbols fail, the rest stay on screen and the source is marked as behind.

If it doesn’t work

The source says stock quotes rejected the API key

The key expired or was revoked. On the Markets page, choose the stocks source, choose Replace… in its Finnhub key row, paste the new key and choose Replace key. Then revoke the old key in Finnhub.

The source is degraded after too many requests

Finnhub refused more requests for now; Denframe waits as Finnhub asks rather than retrying. Use fewer symbols, or check your Finnhub plan’s allowance.

A symbol doesn’t show

Unknown symbols are left out. Check that it is a U.S. listing: Find a company or ticker in Add a watchlist searches for one.

The company search says to add the key first

Paste the key in Finnhub API key; the search uses it.

Currency rates say the market is closed

Reference rates are not published at weekends; the block shows the last day’s rates.
