Open Denframe on your phone

Carry a Studio page, a stream or a batch of photos from the computer to your phone by scanning a one-time code, and see what a paired phone shows the household.

You’ll have

The Studio page you were on, open on your phone after one scan, and your phone’s photos arriving in an album on the dashboard.

You’ll need
  • Denframe open in Studio at an address your phone can reach, not localhost or 127.0.0.1.
  • A phone on the same home Wi-Fi as the Denframe computer.
  • For the shared household view: the phone paired as a family device (Set up access and invite your household).

Follow these steps in your own Denframe. This website never connects to your household, your accounts or your devices, and never asks for your credentials.

  1. Send the Studio page to your phone

In Studio, choose Open this page on my phone, the phone icon in the header. A code appears, already filled in with the page you are on. Scan it with the phone’s camera. It works once, for five minutes, and the popover counts down.

    • Only on the home Wi-Fi is ticked by default: the link opens only from a phone on the same local network as the computer that made it. Keep it ticked; untick it only when a reverse proxy in front of Denframe changes the address it sees, because then every phone looks like the proxy.
    • Also show the code on a screen, offered when a screen is available, puts the code on a chosen screen for 30 seconds, for scanning from across the room. No screen keeps it here.
    • Copy link copies the same one-time link to send another way.

Each opening makes a fresh link. Closing the popover leaves the last link working until it is used or runs out.

  2. Continue on the phone

The phone opens a page headed Phone handoff with the link’s name and when it expires. Choose Continue on this phone.

Studio on the phone asks for the household password if one is set. The link grants only the page it was made for, not general access. On an install with no password, the phone opens Studio with full access.

A screen’s page in Studio may offer Continue on my phone on its Now playing card, for an https stream whose host is on the allowed list (DENFRAME_HANDOFF_HOSTS, restart Denframe after changing it).

  3. Add photos from your phone

In the dashboard editor, choose a picture block’s Artwork source or the background’s Pictures, then Add photos…. In Add photos, choose Add from your phone, pick the album in Add to (or A new album with an Album name; with no albums yet, just type an Album name), then Show code.

Scan the code with the phone’s camera. The phone’s page is headed Add from your phone; tap Photos to open the phone’s own photo picker and choose as many as you like. Each one goes into the album as it arrives, and the sheet on the computer counts them.

Choose Done on the computer when the phone has finished. The album goes onto the block or background. Photos and art covers albums and the other ways in.

The code works once and must be scanned within 15 minutes, on this network; the phone can then add photos for 15 minutes, only to that one album. It cannot read the library or another album. Closing the sheet ends the phone’s access at once, and so does signing out on the computer. Denframe keeps a copy sized for screens; the originals stay on the phone.

  4. Use the shared household view

A phone paired as a family device, a guest or a shared tablet opens the Shared household view, never Studio. It shows only what was approved for that device:

    • Tasks and shopping: shared tasks to Mark complete and shopping items to Mark purchased.
    • Notes: shared notes; a family phone showing one person’s view can Share a note for one week and Post note.
    • For a guest: the guest card, with Show Wi-Fi QR for 60 seconds when Wi-Fi is on it. The code hides by itself, or with Hide now; someone nearby can still photograph it.

It does not show calendars, task notes, media, device controls, settings or history. Lock signs the phone out; to come back it scans a new code.

  5. Check it worked

After Continue on this phone, the phone shows the same Studio page as the computer. After adding photos, the sheet on the computer reads how many photos were added to the album, and the phone says the same.

If it doesn’t work

There is no phone button in the Studio header.

The button appears only where a phone could open its link. Open Studio at the Denframe computer’s network address, or set DENFRAME_MANAGEMENT_BASE_URL, instead of localhost.

The phone says Link unavailable.

The link was already opened, ran out or was cancelled. Make a new one from the computer and scan it again.

The link is refused from the phone.

With Only on the home Wi-Fi ticked, the phone must be on the same home network as the computer, not a guest or mobile network. Untick it only if you trust the network path.

Too many links at once.

At most 1,000 phone links can be outstanding. Wait for earlier ones to be used or run out, or cancel them under Phone links in use.

The Add photos sheet says phones can’t reach Denframe yet.

Denframe answers only on its own computer. On Denframe Desktop, choose Enable LAN receiver access… from its menu-bar or tray icon; on a server, set DENFRAME_RECEIVER_BASE_URL. Then open Add photos again.

Denframe runs inside Home Assistant and shows no photo code.

Open Denframe in the Home Assistant app on the phone and use Add photos there; the phone’s own photo picker opens from it.

A photo wasn’t added.

The phone names each refused photo and why. Photos larger than about 25 MP are refused; choose a smaller copy. If Denframe asks for a pause, wait the time it gives and choose the remaining photos again.
